A BIG THANK YOU to all for making our Sharing Hope Benefit Concert a success!

The concert sold over 300 tickets and raised $1488.80 for our LivingHope School project. The concert saw a collaboration of many different performers (who did not know each other before the concert); with two of them coming all the way up from California, United States! Many non-performers helped the sale of tickets, told others of the Dalits and helped designed T-shirts, posters, etc. A clear, thought-provoking message about the Dalits was delivered that night.

We were concerned that the concert NOT be a showcase of talents but to rouse us to use our talents for God’s mission to the world. Thus, we prayed and worked our hearts out; trusting that people would be ‘inspired to act’ as champions for the Dalits.

We can’t wait to see what would happen next!

As a collaboration project between herrohachi and BHLC Sharing Hope, we have designed a couple t-shirts that will be sold at the upcoming benefit concert.

The purpose of this shirt is to leave a legacy; to leave a lasting impact on those who attended the concert, to always keep the Dalits in mind. We hope this shirt will be a conversation starter, we hope this shirt will be reminder for us to keep the Dalits in mind as we go about our everyday lives, to constantly be that "voice for the Dalit people".

It was eight months ago that we began our campaign to raise funds to build a school for the Dalit children in India. Just three months prior to this eighth month mark was when the mission team went to India, in which the team members had their hearts broken everyday due to witnessing firsthand the poverty and human rights violations that the Dalits endured. Upon our return to Vancouver, we pondered what could we do to participate in the freeing of the Dalits.

On November 26, 2010 we launched our campaign to build a school for the Dalits. The name of the school was also unveiled and it is called 'Living Hope.'

We are in for the ride of our lives with this project, we already see the $100,000 coming in faster than we can ever imagine.

From this we know that our small church in not alone but rather in this together with others that have heard the plight of the Dalits.

Now I can't wait to see what the new year brings as this moves forward.

In the summer of 2010 Pastor Chiew Peng took a team of young people from Vancouver to Northern India to visit the Good Shepherd schools. The trip was life-changing for the entire team and they came home with a desire to stand with the Dalit people in a very practical way, by providing a school.

Pastor CP says, “Our church is not big enough to take on a whole project but perhaps there are other small churches or individuals that would like to make a difference in providing a school for these needy children. We invite you for a special evening with Dr. D’Souza.”

What happened IN & AFTER India

In India, we sang, led worship services, worship workshops, preached, shared the Word, gave testimonies, prayed and basically shared our lives with our brothers and sisters. We visited Dalit villages, slums and schools. BUT we prayed that ‘what happened in India will not just stay in India”.

We have witnessed and saw how our lives were meant to be a ‘light’, to be an extension of God’s body in loving service to the world and we pray that this truth will become embedded as our Christian DNA. In the coming days, we will be discerning God’s plan as to how we can come alongside the Dalits in their fight for social justice.

24-hr flight delay, but finally home.

Home Sweet Home... 24 hours later than scheduled.

The last few days of travelling has been long. Our flight from Delhi to Beijing got delayed by 12 hours, hence causing us to miss our connecting flight to Vancouver. We spent a total of 15 hours in the new international terminal in Delhi and got to meet some other stranded travelers too.

Since many passengers on the flight to Beijing missed their connecting flights, Air China arranged a hotel for us. So we got to stay the night in a Beijing hotel and was provided breakfast and lunch. The whole debacle was messy, starting from Delhi and got even messier in Beijing. Other passengers had problems with finding their luggage, others had problems with visas and immigration; all because of the 12 hours delay in Delhi.

Finally, we got on a plane to Vancouver, 24 hours later than scheduled. Though we experienced more intense turbulence than usual, we all safely arrived in Vancouver at 11:45am on Monday, August 9th. It was a joyous occasion and we all never felt so happy to be home. But we miss definitely miss our home of 2 weeks, India. Thanks to all the OM staff for making it feel like home.

Flying home tonight

Hello all,

We are leaving India and heading for home tonight. We will be flying out of Lucknow, India tonight at 8:30pm, stopping at Delhi and Beijing. We will be arriving at Vancouver roughly at 12pm on Sunday Aug 8th.

Just a quick update from last time; everyone has recovered from their respective illnesses and all are doing well. The last few days have not been too strenuous; that's a good thing because most of us are getting exhausted.

We visited on of the 7 Wonders of the World, Taj Mahal on Wednesday and got back Thursday morning. We travelled there and back by Indian train and that was a great experience.

Also yesterday, we had a chance to meet with a couple of Chinese families that live in Lucknow. One of the OM staff know the families and asked us to meet them because they are not Christians. We had a good time talking about how Chinese we all are though we are from different countries and cultures. We ended the get-together by praying with them and we encouraged them to attend church and get to know more about Jesus.

Please pray for our safe journey and we will see you all soon!

Another Update - Falling ill

Greetings from India, it's currently 7:40 pm IST on August 2 over here in India. The team is currently taking a dinner break at OM (Operation Mobilization) base. Earlier in the day the team minus Kevin visited a village school and participated in a feeding program. Also some some of the OM men were able to install a solar panel to power some lights for the brick house that the teachers at the school are living in. The teachers actually have homes to go home to for the weekend, but because the village school is farely remote, they just live there during the school week.

We are doing well, just that the team is feeling tired during the long days as well some of us are falling ill. Currently Amy is sick and resting back on the hotel, Kevin is recovering and he missed last night's and today's activities. Jerry was sick before, he was the worst that had some of us worried, he had a fever, headache and stomach issues. But he recoverd and participated in today's activities. For the past 3 days the team has been reduced to 6 people since one of us has fallen ill on each of the days while the other would recover.

So pray for Amy, pray that she recovers and also pray that no one else falls ill. God has continued to open our eyes during the trip and we are also very grateful for the hospitality of the Indians, especially the OM workers, they've taken care of us pretty well. I think we all miss our diets we have back at home, we got tired of eating curry since it seems to make our stomachs rumble, I for one miss beef.

Tomorrow we visit and another village where we will share some songs and a sermon. Later on that night we take a train to Agra to do some sight-seeing of the Taj Mahal, after which we will return to Lucknow by the following night.

Greetings from India!

All is well, some are adjusted... some others are adjusting. Food is excellent... and cheap. People are friendly and hospitable. No one is seriously sick... just recovering from heavy curry in the stomach.

Some things to pray for:
- General health (Yesterday, we visited the slums, there are no words to explain we've seen, smelled and felt; unhygenic would be an understatement).
---- Also because of the heat, some have experienced dehydration and weakness... but nothing lasting over a day.
- Energy for all: We are doing fine now but it gets more busy for us in the few days ahead. (Plus it's constant heat and humidity)

God's hand is definitely in this area.

We all went to a travel clinic to get vaccinated and immune to many deadly diseases we might contract when being in India. Each of us had at least 3 shots and racked up a LARGE bill (who knew vaccinations were THAT expensive?)

The travel nurse gave us a very thorough briefing on the diseases we may encounter, how to prevent from being infected, and the symptoms of the disease. Other than the usual fear of traveler's diarrhea, there was a particular disease which was quite scary: Meningitis.

Meningitis, "the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges. Meningitis can be life-threatening because of the inflammation's proximity to the brain and spinal cord."

The vaccines we got include:
- Typhoid Fever
- Malaria
- Hepatitis A
- Meningitis

To raise funds, we are offering services in odd jobs; anything from yardwork, house cleaning, and heavy lifting. Basically, if you need some extra bodies to get something done, we'll do it.

Behind The Scene - Krispy Kreme Pickup, Delivery, and Execution!

By 930AM, Auntie Susie, Jerry, and Crystal arrived at Krispy Kreme to pick up the 130 orders of donut boxes. They managed to fit everything into just one van! Amazing!

24 boxes were then transferred into Gordon's car. Gordon was the delivery driver, while Kevin was the navigator. In the nutshell, Gordon had to be the transporter around Richmond and also to UBC, while trying hard not to get lost and to find all the houses to go to! On the other hand, Kevin used his uber navigation skills and map (check out Kevin's awesome map!!) to assist Gordon on all the routes and the fastest way to get around to the next destination!! Gordon & Kevin started their journey at 10AM and ended their trip by 4PM at Basel Hakka Lutheran Church, with a pitstop at Aberdeen Centre to grab hainanese chicken rice lunch and mango bubble tea!

After a long day of delivering Krispy Kreme to Richmond and UBC (10AM to 4PM), super-tired Kevin still manages to do a short video without any practice at all. Meanwhile, Amy been sitting ever-so-patiently at Basel Hakka Lutheran Church waiting for people to pick up their Krispy Kreme orders.

We managed to sell 130 Krispy Kreme boxes in this event, and will be hoping to do another round of pre-order and sale within a month or two, which will be even bigger and better! Please stay tune for the next Krispy Kreme pre-order and other fundraising events!

India - The Dalit Story

The caste system of India has produced a classless people, literally outcasts, called the Dalits, or untouchables. They number about 300,000,000, representing close to one-third of India's total population. If the Dalits were a nation, it would be larger than the United States of America and the fifth largest in the world.

An incredible movement is taking place in which many Dalits are rejecting Hinduism, which is believed to be the cause of their condition, and in large numbers are embracing other religions, including Christianity.

Although some churches are found among the Dalits, mostly this movement is in its infancy. Other videos in this series, Sounds of Global Worship, feature examples of the varied worship expressions found among these people.

It is the desire of Heart Sounds International to help this emerging church develop its own indigenous worship forms. Of interest is the fact that many of India's artists and creative people come from among the Dalits, and we believe that in time these new Christian believers will compose many new songs of worship to the Lord.

This video is an excerpt from a documentary that Heart Sounds completed by invitation of a ministry within India. It reveals the plight of the Dalits as they struggle to find freedom in the midst of a very difficult situation. Many are finding this freedom through the good news of Jesus Christ Whom the Dalits also recognize as a Dalit, or outcast.
